Diego fell. The sensation was unsettling. He knew that it would happen rather sooner then later. And yet he wouldn’t have minded, if the soldiers kept missing their shots.

Toronado came to an abrupt stop as Diego crashed to the ground. His Zorro attire was still intact and concealed the blood stain, which kept growing. The steed nudged its rider, who managed to get back on his feet. The area seemed unfamiliar.

Damn.” he cursed, temporarily more awake. “no safe place and no more riding.”

Toronado kept by Diegos side and nudged him towards a cave entrance. Barely conscious, the man complied. Without checking for any dangers, he collapsed behind the entrance.

Go, find Felipe, Toronado.” he whispered before the dark engulfed his mind completely. The stallion ran for the man who might save his master and friend.

Diego drifted in and out of consciousness. He felt like he was floating. Everything seemed so far away and distant now.

It’s not your time yet, Diego.” The voice was soft and soothing.

Mother?” He thought with some delight.

Yes.” She answered. “Now be strong. It will hurt and you need to fight and hang on. Your time isn’t even close.”

No, please…” he whispered, before searing pain pushed him back into the abyss.

Wake up! Come on! YOU NEED TO WAKE UP!” The young man kneeled by his masters side. Toronado had found Felipe. The man had paled as he realised there was blood on the steed. Used to his masters escapades he collected the medical items and rode as fast as Toronado would take him. Now he had patched up Zorro as good as the situation allowed.

We need to get him back to the hacienda.” Felipe cursed. “Help me Toronado.”

The stallion lowered himself and Felipe managed to pull Zorro over on the horses back. Careful, that his master stayed up, the stallion rose. After Felipe mounted, they cautiously made their way through the night into the dawn.
